Physiotherapy training courses at Paray Hospital in Thaba-Tseka

Every year, Paray Hospital in Thaba-Tseka hosts one-week upgraded training courses for physiotherapy assistants from public and private hospitals in Lesotho. The courses transmit  specialist knowledge and practical skills, whilst providing a forum for sharing experiences from day-to-day working life and working together to address specific issues. This personal exchange is particularly important, as many physiotherapy assistants work largely independently at their places of employment. Experienced colleagues with many years’ service contribute to the training. They are supported by Wolfgang Fasser, a qualified physiotherapist, who has been involved in physiotherapy training in Lesotho for many years.

The training workshops are aimed at both those who are new to this field and experienced physiotherapy assistants. As long as there is no state-recognised training programme in this field in Lesotho, the courses make an important contribution to continuous professional development and quality assurance. Over the past years, more than 300 people have taken part in the courses; 22 of whom are currently practising.

Between the annual training sessions, participants have access to professional support via tele-supervision. In addition, a distance-learning programme provides in-depth coverage of  practical topics in physiotherapy. An important source for references in daily practice is the website  www.physioinlesotho.ch
